Professional Development for June 2009
Why APICS and Why Now?
As I write this article, two seemingly unrelated events have just occurred. First, the US Department of Labor has released their monthly report stating that the unemployment rate has risen to 7.2%. That number follows the loss of 524,000 jobs in December including 149,000 manufacturing jobs, 101,000 in construction, and 113,000 in professional and business services. For all of 2008, the economy lost 2.6 million jobs. That is the most in one year since 1945. Some economists predict the unemployment rate will rise to between 9% and 10% by the end of 2009.
The second event – I received today from APICS a copy of three publications: a certification brochure for the CSCP program (Certified Supply Chain Professional), a certification maintenance bulletin for CPIM/CFPIM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management), and a Resources Catalog describing the various publications available to us as members.
The employment picture illustrates the need for all of us to prepare ourselves for professional and personal advancement. The brochures from APICS describe excellent ways we can do that. First, the CSCP program, introduced in the last two years, is the “first comprehensive educational program designed for operations and supply chain management professionals to demonstrate their mastery of supply chain management best practices” and gives us the opportunity to increase our value to employers “who know that a well-run supply chain is a key component of a forward-looking and competitive enterprise.”
Second, the CPIM program is “recognized worldwide as the standard of professional competence in production and inventory control and supply chain management.” More than 80,000 professionals have earned their CPIM designation. Are you one of them?
Third, all of the resources listed in the APICS catalog have been created to help us prepare for career and professional opportunities.
Many of the educational offerings from APICS are made available through your chapter – the APICS Sundance Chapter. In January, two Basics of Supply Chain Management courses will begin. In February and March, courses in Master Planning of Resources and Detailed Scheduling and Planning will begin. Later in the spring, we will offer courses in Execution and Control of Operations and Strategic Management of Resources. Also beginning in March is the new Lean Enterprise workshop series which will be taught by a local Lean Master, Jeff Kolff. In addition to these courses, we have our regular monthly Professional Development Meetings featuring presentations by expert practitioners in different aspects of operations management. We will also offer an instructor led course in CSCP later this year as well as the Fundamentals series of courses.
All of these opportunities have been put in place to help you be prepared for career opportunities and become more valuable to your employer or potential employer. Take advantage of them. Get involved. Make this the year to finish your certification or start working towards it. If you are certified, give back by preparing to teach a review course.
Despite the current economic climate, there are opportunities all around for those who are prepared.
